For the first time in a long time, Liverpool have gone into a new Premier League season with 4 very solid options in the middle of their defence. Over the years the club have been used to relying on 2, maybe 3 centre backs to get them through the seasons. This season was different with a healthy competition for places with Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip all fighting for the 2 spots in the team. Although this seems like a very good position to be in, injuries have been a very frustrating factor for 3 of these options. The injury crisis has been so bad at times this season that Fabinho has had to fill in at the back as cover. Joe Gomez can be seen as the acceptation due to him getting 2 very unfortunate ligament injuries as well as a recent broken leg in a 2-1 win at Turf Moor back in December. However, regular knocks picked up by both Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are becoming a real concern for Jurgen Klopp and may force the German to dip into the transfer market again in summer for a reliable partner at the back for Virgil Van Dijk. In recent weeks the club have been linked to Ajax youngster Matthijs de Ligt and if such move were to go ahead, it would seem likely that either Matip or Lovren would have to depart the club.
